10 Things I've Done That You (Probably) Haven't
The idea here is to note things you've done that you think are pretty unique. You'll be surprised at how many people end up saying "Hey, I've done that, too!" List them in your own blog and let the fun begin (you can also add your list in comments, or put a link back to any entry you write).
Here's my list:
1. Was almost in a plane crash.
2. Played with a baby panther and a lion cub.
3. Fed my daughter pheasant eggs for breakfast.
4. Worked in an incense factory.
5. Yelled at a drill sargeant for swearing in front of children.
6. Played pool with Donald Sutherland.
7. Hitched horses to a stagecoach.
8. Lived in the servant's quarters of a mansion in Key West.
9. Took years and years of Polynesian dance lessons.
10. Rode home from kindergarten with my dad on his Indian motorcycle.
What are your ten things? Write them up on your own blog or in the comment thread!

Me: Can if I want.

Thirteen Movies I Love but Feel Compelled to Explain Why
- Notting Hill. And they lived happily ever after and had darling babies with British accents.
- Stage Door. All those rival starlets bitching and clawing. Hepburn's famous (stolen/borrowed) line "The calla lilies are in bloom again." Lucille Ball before Ricky. Ginger Rogers without Fred.
- Much Ado About Nothing. Exactly. The Italian sun on Vignamaggio and Shakespeare at play. Hey Nonny, Nonny.
- Shogun. The costuming! Scene after scene of culture clash, Anjin-san.
- A League of Their Own. Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna playing themselves playing baseball while you watch Geena Davis and Tom Hanks.
- The Long Kiss Goodnight. Every action-film trick in the book. Amnesia chick. Endangered child. Fast cars. Humorous sidekick. Big explosions. Guns galore. Evil, evil men. Neatly diced vegetables. Chefs do that.
- White Squall. A crew of preppy kids face the perfect storm with Jeff Bridges at the helm. A true story, honest.
- Donovan's Reef. Morality play on a tropical isle. With the exception of Dorothy Lamour, it's not the usual cast of island-dwellers: John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Cesar Romero, Jack Warden. And they live happily ever after, too.
- Eat, Drink, Man, Woman. The first 7 minutes. Food. Oh, the food!
- Drumline. Those drum cadences. Love 'em. The rest of the movie is several other movies I've seen.
- Mr. Holland's Opus. Mr. Holland does good and I love to watch him do it.
- Twister. Bill loves too much. Melissa. Jo. Dorothy. An F5 tornado. They will all try to kill him, but not one will succeed. But, hey--they live happily ever after, too! Well, maybe not Dorothy.
- The Addams Family and TAFValues. I know, that makes 14, but I always watch them together. "Don't torture yourself. That's my job." Morticia is my hero.

And for Wednesday..
0. Take five books off your bookshelf.
1. Book #1 -- first sentence
2. Book #2 -- last sentence on page fifty
3. Book #3 -- second sentence on page one hundred
4. Book #4 -- next to the last sentence on page one hundred fifty
5. Book #5 -- final sentence of the book
6. Make the five sentences into a paragraph.
We finally have floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves, which made this meme a lot easier! Okay, there are still piles of books all over, but I limited myself to those on shelves.
I'm a modern man, digital and smoke-free; a man for the millenium. The rice was obviously scorched, the meat dried out, the dessert burnt. And there in the middle of that relentless, monotonous bed, I spotted one: a violent eruption of red on a chaste canary petal. He rode no horse. As the afternoon sun turned the ship's mast and sails to gold, a single tear rolled from beneath one smoky lens and journeyed down her cheek.
Book #1 -- When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? ~ George Carlin
Book #2 -- Like Water for Chocolate ~ Laura Esquivel
Book #3 -- The Botany of Desire ~ Michael Pollan
Book #4 -- West with the Night ~ Beryl Markham
Book #5 -- The Voyage of the Bassett ~ James Christensen

Thursday Thirteen
It was my intent to base this Thirteen on the pagan rites of Spring, but after a bit of research and gathering, I realized that I had seen it all before. Instead, I'm offering other harbingers of Spring--something never before seen on the Web--thirteen pictures of baby animals! You want to look--I know you do..
VI. Human (A 2006 Edition was likely to bear the name Emily or Jacob.)

VIII. Anteater and anteater mom

XII. Grey squirrels (All of them live in our yard.)
Okay, it's officially Spring now. Everyone mate, tend to the young ones, play, and grow!
Mammals do that.

His beak could open a bottle,
and his eyes - when he lifts their soft lids -
go on reading something
just beyond your shoulder -
Blake, maybe,
or the Book of Revelation.
Never mind that he eats only
the black-smocked crickets,
and the dragonflies if they happen
to be out late over the ponds, and of course
the occasional festal mouse.
Never mind that he is only a memo
from the offices of fear -
it’s not size but surge that tells us
when we’re in touch with something real,
and when I hear him in the orchard
fluttering
down the little aluminum
ladder of his scream -
when I see his wings open, like two black ferns,
a flurry of palpitations
as cold as sleet
rackets across the marshlands
of my heart
like a wild spring day.
Somewhere in the universe,
in the gallery of important things,
the babyish owl, ruffled and rakish,
sits on its pedestal.
Dear, dark dapple of plush!
A message, reads the label,
from that mysterious conglomerate:
Oblivion and Co.
The hooked head stares
from its house of dark, feathery lace.
It could be a valentine.

Major award

Bestowed by my dearest friend, Miz Dragonfly herself. Thanks!
According to the rules (I'll get to that in a sec), I hereby distribute, or redistribute, that same sentiment to these worthy folk:
Ronnie, Frank, and MJ. If you didn't blog, I would miss you so much I'd almost have to move back to the Seattle slough. And though they don't blog, my other day-makers are my lovely daughter, Sarah, the keeper of our SoCal family branch; my lovely son, Sean, who writes beautifully but blog he does not; and my highly esteemed mate, Rick. And my friend, Chloe, who writes for herself (so far).
Truth be told, other than the three blogs mentioned above, I don't read anyone's on a regular basis. The Web holds too much that I haven't yet seen. And I must see it because--well, I just must.
And now..
1. Write a post with links to five blogs that make your day.
2. Acknowledge the post of the award giver.
3. Display the “You Make My Day Award” logo.
4. Tell the award winners that they have won by commenting on their blogs or emailing them the news.

Thirteen Items Available on ebay Today
![]() |
1. You can buy and download instructions for making this Diaper Cake. (why???)
2. A Kryptonite-looking green rock. Just in case Clark Kent is in the neighborhood. 3. Johann Sebastian Bach's handwritten letter of resignation to the Council of Muhlhausen, dated June 25, 1708. 4. An embalming machine. What a great Christmas gift for the dedicated CSI fan! 5. Devil on the Can. Painted on--what else?--black velvet. Yes--quality you can feel. 6. The Maltese Falcon. I kid you not! The bidding opens at $250,000. 7. A cashmere Edwardian ice-skating coat lined in cream satin. Lovely, but landing a triple Salchow would be tricky. 8. Jesus handpainted on an ostrich egg. You could serve the world's largest deviled egg before the Easter dinner lamb! 9. A baseball signed by Bill Clinton. But leave it in the box--you don't know where it's been. 10. Meet Sophie. She's a mohair bear of unbearable cuteness. 11. Geronimo, a self-portrait. 1901. He was by then a celebrity prisoner at Fort Sill, where he died in 1909. Allow me to distract you with this tidbit from wikipedia: "In 1918, certain remains of Geronimo were stolen in a grave robbery. Three members of the Yale secret society of Skull and Bones served as Army volunteers at Fort Sill during World War I; one of those three members was Prescott Bush, father of the forty-first President of the United States George H. W. Bush and grandfather of George W. Bush. They reportedly stole Geronimo's skull, some bones, and other items, including Geronimo's prized silver bridle, from the Apache Indian Prisoner of War Cemetery." The truth of this story is questioned by some. What do you think?
12. A full suit of stainless steel Gothic-style combat armor. Imagine the practical jokes you can play on someone who is dressed in this! 13. A mansion/hotel in the Garden District of New Orleans. It probably has some lovely ghosts. |
